2 Reasons Why DIY Airbag System Installation Is Never a Good Idea

Blog

Whether your vehicle has outdated airbags or none at all, you may have decided that you need to install a new system. Since it does not appear to be a complicated procedure, you may be considering trying to install them yourself to save time and money.

However, the installation of an airbag system is much more complicated than it appears to be at first glance. There are a couple of reasons why it is never a good idea to attempt this job yourself, relying on a professional to do it instead. Read on to learn more about airbag installations.

1. You Will Not Be Able to Get the Positioning of the Airbag Correct Without the Proper Knowledge

One reason why installing your own airbags is not a good idea is that their positioning must be precise. Ensuring that the bags are deployed in the right direction requires knowledge that you probably do not have.

If the bags are positioned incorrectly, they would not deploy so that the person's head is centred. If the bags are not centred, the impact could cause a strike at the wrong place on the head, neck, or chest, causing serious injury.

Or, if not positioned correctly, they may only partially deploy or not at all. A professional has the knowledge and experience necessary to ensure that these scenarios do not happen.

2. You Will Not Be Able to Set the Trigger Force Correctly Without the Right Equipment

Another problem with trying to install your own system is that you do not have access to the right equipment to correctly set the trigger force. When a vehicle is struck, this trigger force sends a message to deploy the airbags at a precise moment and trajectory.

If you do not have the equipment to make the correct calibrations, the airbags may not deploy at the recommended collision force. Or, they may be triggered by slight pressure while you are driving. Only a professional installer has access to the equipment that is needed.

If you were to attempt installing airbags in your vehicle yourself, you would not have the proper knowledge required to position them correctly. You would also not have the right equipment to ensure that the trigger force was set correctly so that they would deploy only when needed. Contact a service that offers airbag system installation services to have a professional take care of installing them instead of taking the chance of being seriously injured by doing it yourself.
